Afilias Increases DNS Security with DNSSEC

DUBLIN, Ireland – Afilias, a global provider of Internet infrastructure services, announced today that it has allowed Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) for the country code, five top-level (ccTLD) in Latin America and the Caribbean. The ccTLD whose area has been secured by DNSSEC are. AG (Antigua and Barbuda), Belize (Belize), HN (Honduras), LC (Saint Lucia) and VC (Saint Vincent and the Grenadines )….. These top-level domains have been officially signed by Afilias on October 5, 2010.

“Afilias is pleased to be able to improve security in the region of Latin America and the Caribbean, on behalf of our customers, enabling DNSSEC in these important areas of level,” said Ram Mohan, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Afilias . “The potential of DNSSEC to protect Internet users against malicious attacks depends directly on their collective adoption. With the inclusion of five other top-level domains, the adoption of DNSSEC is growing and presents a stronger argument for the other members of the chain of trust to proceed with deployment. ”

“Among the fastest growing regions in the world in terms of Internet usage, the number of Latin American and Caribbean Internet users has increased by more than 100 times in the last ten years,” said Dr. Patrick Lay NIC AG, on behalf of Antigua and Barbuda. “Through the deployment of DNSSEC are able to demonstrate our leadership in the Caribbean market as a registry operator visionary who is ready to help the foundation of the evolving Internet security for the next decade of research and development.”

DNSSEC protects DNS cache poisoning exploits that can allow malicious entities to intercept Internet users request to access a website, and redirect or spy on you without your knowledge, and unable to regain control . DNSSEC introduces a digital signature to the DNS infrastructure and ensures that DNS replies come from their source of authority.

Afilias signing of this ccTLD is part of its “Project Safeguard” the initiative, bringing the number of TLDs guaranteed by registration platform seven. Project Safeguard Afilias plans include deployment of DNSSEC in the DNS registration and platforms and also incorporates a program of education and training of registrars to facilitate their adoption and implementation. Afilias DNSSEC will soon turn to other TLDs that supports it, in total adding DNSSEC to 13 top level domains by the end of 2010.
