AMD Opteron™ Processor-Based Platform Helps ATCA Servers Deliver Improved Network Traffic
At the ATCA Summit, AMD (NYSE: AMD) is demonstrating its latest developments to help improve the performance capability of the network of the industry standard Advanced Telecommunications Computing Architecture (ATCA) blade server. Quad-Core AMD Opteron ™, 50 and 71W TDP, provide a high performance, low power platform for networking and telecommunications. AMD’s new server chipset with PCI Express ® 2.0 and HyperTransport ™ 3 offers a complete solution with I / O enhanced ability to increase performance on previous generation platforms.
“The increased bandwidth offered by PCI Express ® 2.0 is useful in improving the network performance data when combined with an appropriate increase in the number of CPUs or CPU cores to help with accuracy the path of the additional traffic, said Patrick Patla, vice president and general manager, Server and Embedded Business, AMD. “The Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor provides this computing power and 50W and 71W versions available, is a great choice for the budget of 200 watts of power from the ATCA specification.”
“Our research shows that the market for ATCA applications remains very strong despite the recession. This is partly due to a change in the property industry design of interoperable standards and commercial off the shelf building blocks “said Eric Heikkila, Director, Embedded Hardware and Systems Research VDC. “Improvements in the blade platform, AMD is a great example of this concept of building block. Customers who have deployed previous AMD Opteron processor-based ATCA system now have the option to further expand its design with a simple upgrade” 1 .
“With the new AMD embedded platform, they are able to deliver high performance networks high bandwidth and still maintain strict overall limit of system power ATCA specification,” said Patrick Welzien, Vice President of Engineering, Diversified Technology, Inc. “Our new leaf, ATC6239, has two 45nm Quad-Core AMD Opteron and trust this COTS scalable platform, we were able to extend the life of the system and recognize cost efficiencies.”
