EvoSwitch, Chosen as Internet HUB for Wikimedia Europe
Carrier-neutral info center in Amsterdam that operates entirely CO2-neutral, EvoSwitch, has entered into a contract operator and owner of Wikipedia, with The Wikimedia Foundation. As a part of the contract, Evoswitch is providing over 300,000 Eurodollars of in-kind support in the shape of bandwidth and hosting services. Wikimedia will use the Amsterdam site as its Center for Europe. Brion Vibber, Chief Technology Officer for the Foundation explained, ”We’re really happy with EvoSwitch’s pro and well secured info center environment, which has a highly cost-efficient infrastructure in a location that is of great strategic significance to us.
We’re going to be using the Amsterdam site for caching especially, planning to scale back the reply time of our project web sites in Europe. EvoSwitch will be a good location for backing up content that is stored at our Florida info center. Ultimately , we’re going to be relocating EU publishing projects to EvoSwitch, for example Toolserver.org – a project of the German Wikimedia chapter. The Wikimedia Foundation manages 8 distinct, open, wiki based publishing projects, including the free online encyclopedia Wikipedia.
Wikipedia is solidly ranked one of the top 5 most visited internet sites in the world by comScore MediaMetrix, serving billions of page perspectives each month. All Wikimedia’s publishing projects are hosted on a central info infrastructure based in Florida, USA.
The complementary part of the infrastructure will now be based in Amsterdam at the EvoSwitch data center. Mr Vibber considers the environmentally friendly nature of EvoSwitch another advantage. Mr Vibber added, ”As operators of one of the most heavily accessed web property on the internet, we are conscious of the impact the Net and its power usage have on the environment. EvoSwitch’s energy-saving measures, mixed with their use of green energy and CO2 compensation are awfully engaging to us.
The Wikimedia Foundation’s hosting infrastructure in Florida incorporates over three hundred servers. The Foundation will install about fifty servers at the EvoSwitch site in Amsterdam. According to Mr Vibber, ”The Amsterdam servers will both retrieve the content from the servers in Florida, as well as store it. Pages can then be displayed to Web users without delay from Amsterdam, that may improve the rate and accessibility of the net pages in Europe noticeably.
I am expecting that we intend to further increase our capacity at EvoSwitch in the future because of the needed storage capacity and new European publishing projects. The Wikimedia Foundation is a non profit organization with idealistic objectives that are in accordance with EvoSwitch’s company objectives.
Eric Boonstra, Commercial Director at EvoSwitch remarked, ”We are powerful advocates of Wikimedia and their Wikipedia publishing project especially, affirms The Foundation’s operations coincide with the objectives of our own organization, to keep the web ‘open’ and excite liberty of expression and the transmission of information thru the Net. This partnership is much more special to us due to Wikimedia’s religion in EvoSwitch.”. The Wikimedia Foundation is the charitable organization which operates Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
According to comScore Media Metrix, Wikipedia and the other projects controlled by the Wikimedia Foundation receive more than three hundred million unique visitors a month, making them the fourth most well liked web property world-wide. Available in more than 265 languages, Wikipedia contains more than 12 million articles gave by a world volunteer community of more than 100,000 folks.
