Not just a healthy lifestyle can help control the physical symptoms that can help you feel better overall. “Keep yourself and your skin as healthy as possible to increase quality of life,” says Valori Treloar, MD, CNS, a dermatologist in Integrative Dermatology in Newton, Massachusetts, and author of The Clear Skin Diet.
Here are five health habits that can help control the symptoms of psoriasis:
1. Manage stress in your life. Stress can worsen psoriasis symptoms in some people, Dr. Trelles said. If you’re one of those people, it is important to manage stress. To do this, start by simplifying your life. Learn to say no to friends, family and colleagues if they are asking to do more than it can comfortably handle. Participate in relaxing activities like yoga, meditation or tai chi. “Finding a stress reduction activity you enjoy, and daily practice,” says Treloar. “You have to practice to get right.” It can also reduce stress by adjusting their responses to the world around you. Instead of focusing on what is wrong, try to focus on what is right and what makes you feel good.

2. Avoid skin irritants. When shopping for soaps and shampoos, take care of people with fragrances and perfumes added. scented formulas can sting or irritate already inflamed skin. Read labels and look for unscented soaps, shampoo, liquid soaps, and even laundry detergent. Also, avoid disinfectants waterless alcohol-based. 4. Quitting smoking and limiting alcohol consumption. “The first thing I tell my patients is, if you smoke, stop. If you drink, you know that can worsen psoriasis,” says Treloar. Not only is smoking a common trigger for the symptoms of psoriasis, which increases their risk of developing cancer and cardiovascular disease. And people with psoriasis and have a higher risk for a number of medical conditions, including cancer and heart disease. Alcohol has also been associated with psoriasis, although the link is not clear. “Most studies show that increasing alcohol intake is associated with new onset of psoriasis or worsening of psoriasis.”

Be sure to include fruits and vegetables in your diet, as they are loaded with vitamins, minerals and fiber. Limit foods that are high in fat and cholesterol.
