In recent times, hosting providers have been dipping their toes in the business of research, with The Planet launching its research project the IT Efficacy Index, and UK hosting provider FastHosts issuing a sequence of studies on small business IT recently. Beil, who was formerly VP of research and development at Tier 1, is working to build a research practice at Parallels, one meant to benefit both the company and its clients and partners.
WHIR : to start with, could you sometimes describe the research effort you are launching at Parallels? Does the project have a particular title?
Joshua Beil : One of the stuff we learned from surveying of our partners lately was that most of them don’t have the resources available to do their own first market research.
The research effort I’m launching wants to fill this opening and add price to the Parallels Partner Program by working with our Partners to jointly gathering end-user intelligence and market trends. I am calling it the Parallels Partner Research Program. Are you able to describe if or how this service will transliterate into a product? Is it something Parallels purchasers or partners are paying for? If that is the case how much?
JB : This is a complimentary benefit to Parallels Authorized Partners. On a quarterly basis, I’ll provide each participating partner with a branded URL to send to their clients. I’ll work with all participator to investigate their info, and I’m going to present each Partner with their custom results as well as total, or industry, results from all Partners.
Solely to be clear, at no point will Parallels have direct accessibility to purchasers or explicit shopper details and each Partner will own their own information. In addition, all info will remain in the strictest of confidence and our existing NDAs with our Partners will apply.

JB : Given the fresh beta launch of Parallels Panel SMB Edition and Parallels Marketplace, the 1st survey will be targeted on SaaS trends. In particular , it’ll glance at the timing and sorts of SaaS adoption by horizontal and vertical applications. In Q4, I want to target the VPS market and understand the developing pricing and perception dynamics in this segment. Particularly , how is the info you going to provide going to be valuable to the partners who participate?
JB : Partners who take part will receive intelligence about their business and the industry without any cost or management. Partners will gain understanding of shopper demographics, understand shopper trends, and be ready to compare their results to a sector average. Hopefully the research will help Partners plan for future products and services. And in particular how is the info going to be helpful for Parallels?
JB : We are truly searching for this to improve the value of the Parallels Partner Program.
Is the project already underway? What are you working on now, and what can folk do if they need to get involved? As just discussed, a Q3 study will be taking a look at SaaS trends. A smattering of the largest names in mass market hosting have just committed to participating.
