Microsoft Outlines Opportunity in the Cloud and on Devices

Today at the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference (PDC) Microsoft Corp. showed how developers can build applications in the cloud to experience rich, immersive device. In addition to the developers present at the company’s corporate campus in Redmond, Washington, the event was broadcast live on the Web, reaching more than 20,000 developers in over 200 events held PDC worldwide.

During the keynote speech, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and President Server and Tools Bob Muglia showed how the company is advancing the Microsoft platform, which covers the PC, phone and the cloud. Microsoft noted in particular the momentum of Windows Azure, Windows 7, Internet Explorer 9 and Windows 7 phone and the opportunity for the developers of today and tomorrow.

“Microsoft is combining the power and scope of the tag device to the Web and local experiences,” said Ballmer. “There has never been a better time for developers to bet on Microsoft.”

Customer momentum
Since the commercial availability of Windows Azure was announced earlier this year, Microsoft has seen strong growth, with nearly 20,000 applications to date. Demonstrating its application RenderMan for the opening speech of Pixar Animation Studios showed how it intends to use Windows Azure to manage more efficiently compute cycles of the scale, as needed, to help improve project performance and eliminate costly back-end infrastructure.

NVoicePay, a key technology partner of Automatic Data Processing Inc. (ADP), is using Windows Azure Azure and SQL to provide midsize companies with the ability to pay bills electronically and through a desktop PC or a mobile device.

“The construction of a mission-critical B2B payment would have been almost impossible without the cost,” pay-as-you-go “access to the Windows Azure platform,” said Karla Friede, executive director NVoicePay. “We could not have built our network at this speed and cost without it.”

Microsoft also revealed that more than 70 partners – including Twitter, Facebook and Amazon.com – which represents more than two-thirds of active Web traffic are building the capabilities of Internet Explorer 9 and HTML5. Since the launch of Internet Explorer 9 beta in September, has been more than 10 million downloads, making it the fastest-adopted version, a beta version of Internet Explorer ever. The company also highlighted a growing list of companies committed to your Windows 7, including PopCap Games Inc., Intuit Inc., Amazon.com and Facebook. The access ramp to PaaS: Transfer of applications in the cloud

For existing applications, an option for customers is to move workloads to the cloud, using virtual machines to help reduce costs and burdens of traditional management. Muglia announced two new capabilities of Microsoft to Windows Azure to allow customers to get in the way to the platform as a service (PaaS): Windows Azure Virtual Machine role and application server virtualization. Windows Azure role VM offers customers the ability to run an instance of Windows Server 2008 R2 running on the Microsoft cloud, making it easier for developers to move applications to the cloud. The application server virtualization offers developers the ability to transfer images to Windows Azure applications, leveraging the management capabilities of the platform base.

The improvement and transformation of applications in the Cloud

Microsoft announced a series of Windows Azure services, which also help developers create rich applications of cloud that open new business opportunities. To enable this, Microsoft introduced Windows Azure AppFabric Composition Model to accelerate the process of assembly services from a deployment of critical applications and management capabilities. To better connect customers to developers, Microsoft announced Windows Azure market, including the new DataMarket (formerly known as “Dallas Project”), which offers premium and allocating public demographic, financial, entertainment and data and other content. Commercially available today, the market has more than 35 vendors now offer data subscriptions.

Windows Azure scale projects and small and large businesses, including mobile applications that require a more easy and inexpensive to test and build prototypes. In the PDC, Microsoft highlighted its ongoing commitment to HTML5 and showed how developers can merge the full hardware acceleration and focusing on the design of the site in Internet Explorer 9 to harness the power of PC hardware, transforming their Web sites feel more like native Windows applications. As part of an ongoing commitment to standards and the “same mark-up” Internet Explorer 9, the company also announced the availability of Windows Internet Explorer Platform Preview 9 6, available for download.

The increasing power and accessibility of rich devices, combined with the ease of application development in your Windows 7 has led to more than half a million free downloads of your Windows development tools to date. Many of the same language skills, and tools used to develop applications in the cloud with Windows Azure have reached Phone for Windows applications and games.
