Q&A: Dan Kurtz
Over the previous six years, Quality Tech has built a powerful network of 11 info center facilities that covers a total of footprint of more than 2.5 million sq. feet of space. Offering both wholesale info center space and managed services, Quality Tech has more than 1.3 million sq. feet in the Atlanta market alone, including its 375,000 square foot info center in Suwanee, and a 1 million square foot property in central Atlanta. Through a number of key acquisitions of information centers across the nation, the Firm has constructed an information center footprint of 2.5 million sq. feet with a market valuation of over $500 million.
The Buzz : How did the company develop from a property development firm to an information center operator? Dan Kurtz : In 2003 Chad Williams, Chairperson of QualityTech, got a building in Kansas City that had a small info center found inside it. At the time, Mark Waddington, President of QualityTech, was running a small info center outsourcer in Omaha and was looking for a location in Kansas City. Mark and Chad met and made a relationship that evolved into Quality Technology Services when they acquired the previous eDeltacom in Atlanta. The Firm has expanded its data center footprint reasonably rapidly in about 4 years. What would you are saying is the secret of this success?
DK : the genuine secret is good people and not being scared to take a risk. How would you describe the Atlanta info center market and where does Quality Tech see itself within this space?
DK : The information center market in Atlanta is beginning to become more competitive. QualityTech is a pace-setter in Atlanta due to our availability of top end space and services at competitive costs. We have over 1.3 million sq. feet of facilities in Atlanta so clearly we consider ourselves awfully invested in Atlanta.
We are the largest collocation provider in the Southeast with 400,000 sq. feet of raised floor online today and plan to grow a further three hundred thousand sq. feet in the Atlanta market. We see continued expansion in the local Atlanta market but actually a great number of our patrons aren’t even from the Atlanta market. What are the key factors the company looks for in an information center facility for a probable acquisition? DK : We are targeting 3 urgent items, power, fiber and construction. Plenty of other metrics play into a final purchase, but these 3 are key for consideration. What other regions is the company considering for growth at this time? DK : In the future, our focus is on the US and Canada, but have considered two opportunities in India, East Asia and Australia. Inside the US, you will probably see expansion in most major urban areas which we aren’t now found.
