Smoking and your health 150x150 Smoking and your healthSmoking may be banned on television and in many public places, but that does not mean Americans are not yet lit, be tried for it and the sex appeal of this deadly habit is not dying. In fact, when we asked in our recent survey of smoking, 47 percent admitted they had smoke cigarettes if they knew that would not affect their personal health, while 53 percent said they would not. As many as 30,681 readers responded, with 20 percent self-identified smokers (a number quite consistent with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention figure of nearly 20 percent). Fifty-eight percent of you think of themselves as nonsmokers, while the rest of those who define themselves, either in the process of quitting smoking or quitting.

But that was just the tip of the iceberg. Of attitudes about letting feelings about smoking, they actually came to our challenge and provided us with a lot of great information from the survey. To help get an idea of what these data sets may mean, we’ve enlisted the help of Tom Glynn, Ph.D., director of Cancer Research and Trends of the American Cancer Society, and Susan Nolen-Hoeksema, professor of psychology at Yale University and author of The Power of Women: Harness your unique strengths at home, at work and in their community (January 2010). Read on to know the breakdown.

What drives you crazy about smoking?
