As a part of the contract, EvoSwitch will supply over $421,000 of in-kind support for Wikimedia in the shape of bandwidth and hosting services. The Foundation’s projects are presently hosted on three hundred servers at an info center in Florida.  With this latest deal, the organization will install about fifty servers at the EvoSwitch site, which it will use basically for caching and backup. Brion Vibber, chief technology officer for the Foundation, says the green nature of EvoSwitch offers another advantage for The Foundation.

Early on in the year, EvoSwitch was recognized by the German Federal Environment Ministry as one of eleven energy-efficient info centers in its report of best-practices in the area of green info center initiatives in Europe, the US and Pacific Rim. The facility has more than thirty thousand sq. feet of floor space and a total capacity of 20 Megawatt.

We are powerful fans of Wikimedia and their Wikipedia free data project in particular,” asserts Eric Boonstra, EvoSwitch’s commercial director. “The Foundation’s operations coincide with the objectives of our own organization, to keep the Net ‘open’ and excite freedom of expression and the transmission of information through the Net.

This partnership is much more special to us due to Wikimedia’s religion in EvoSwitch.
