IBM Lotus Connections Software Brings Consumer Social Networking Features to the Office

IBM today announced a broader set of social software tools and enterprise collaboration capabilities that provides popular features such as micro-blogging of the house in the business environment.

Realizing the benefits of Web 2.0 and Enterprise 2.0, IBM is providing a complete platform of social software for businesses with the launch of Lotus Connections 2.5. The new software is being announced at a summit of IBM’s collaboration worldwide in Cambridge, Massachusetts attended by hundreds of customers, partners and IBM experts met to discuss the future development of business collaboration.

The news today of Lotus Connections is being conducted in collaboration with the IBM Center for Social Software Symposium this week, marking the first anniversary of the launch of the Center for Social Software. Lotus Connections, which originated in IBM Research, is an example of the types of technologies resulting from the Center for Social Software incubator for innovative technologies.

The new version of Lotus Connections expands IBM’s commitment to running a business-grade social software platform on the market. With the extranet, Internet and collaboration services on the intranet provided by IBM and IBM customers, Lotus Connections enables tens of millions of users around the world to connect and collaborate.

For Lotus Connections pilot program participant Sogeti, a subsidiary of Capgemini, which specializes in technology services, was a great need to contact the company of 20,000 people spread across 200 offices in 14 countries. After extensive analysis, which examined all available options, turned to Sogeti for its Lotus Connections social networking and collaboration functionality.

Lotus Connections 2.5 includes an enhanced experience Communities with new features and capabilities. Community owners can now customize the appearance of their community and move players around on the main page of the community. Owners can add activities, blogs, wikis, file sharing and services to their communities, and bookmarks, feeds, and capabilities of the forum. This significantly improves the options for community members to collaborate on projects and content.

In addition, the UI forum for community discussion now displays items in a more conversational format with photos of users. The new service allows users wiki designed to create, view, edit and contribute content that is uploaded to the intranet website style of collaboration. The service profiles are enhanced with a micro-blogging feature that allows users to send updates on the status of the tasks they are working. This allows users to its network of professional contacts to see what is working and offer comments. A new function of message board offers a place in the user profile page where colleagues can send messages and comments on status updates. The combination of message board and micro-blogging capabilities provides a simple and easy for people to maintain active connections to colleagues.

The latest version of Lotus Connections provides a new file, Web-based library sharing for users to easily upload and securely share content such as presentations and documents. Using social software features such as tagging, ratings, recommendations, and observation skills, the solution offers an effective way for colleagues to share, view and comment on the content.

New integrated mobile support for the iPhone and Nokia S60 devices allows access to the profiles of Lotus Connections, activities and blogging services. Now the professionals who frequently travel or work remotely can update their status and location of people in their profiles directly from mobile devices.

Moreover, the new version of Lotus Connections offers a number of improvements to existing services, including the Home Page, Blogs, Scores and activities offered in the previous version of the platform.

“With Lotus Connections, have come together to share documents and social network capabilities to create a global collaboration platform for businesses,” said Jeff Schick, vice president of social software at IBM.

From Lotus Connections is based on industry standards, providing integration with Microsoft SharePoint. This integration allows users to search in Lotus Connections profile within Microsoft SharePoint, Lotus Connections cards integrate into Microsoft SharePoint and provides access to Lotus Connections cloud web part tag for use in Microsoft SharePoint.
