NASA Stores Lunar Images on CloudNAS

Pictures from the satellite’s camera are broadcast from the satellite to a project team at Arizona State School for methodical processing, duplicated to secondary high-performance storage in another building at ASU and then duplicated to the Nirvanix Storage Delivery Network as a tertiary form of storge.

Containing terabytes worth of lunar photographs and information, this copy is hosted off-site using Nirvanix’s software-based secure corporation cloud storage gateway, CloudNAS. “This is a particularly crucial project for them,” Nirvanix president and general manager Jim Zierick announces.

“They had a selected concern around trying to make certain this really valuable info which is also interesting to the general public was kept in a form that not only made it secure, which was NASA’s duty, to have multiple copies for long-term information preservation purposes, but they [also] wanted to make certain this information might be accessible to the general public. And cloud storage offered them a choice that met both of those requirements. After a four-day trip to the moon, the LRO commenced its low polar orbit of the moon, where it is going to be for no less than a year, picking up detailed info about the lunar environment which will help future robotic and manned missions to the moon.

“Historically they used tape,” Zierick declared. “Tape is a standard form of info protection technique, but there are long term issues with tape – it can get lost, it can be tough to restore.” he asserts tape can’t reliably secure information for years or perhaps centuries, when, especially in this case, it will remain helpful. As a media event, this partnership has helped Nirvanix reach a bigger audience, according to senior director of selling Adrian Herrera. “We’ve definitely seen an uptake in traffic to our site and we’ve gotten a particularly positive reply from the press and also researchers.

The ASU and the NASA names bring a very good cache to any deal, particularly in the way they use [the storage] in an inventive way, mapping out the location for an abiding presence on the moon.”. This partnership has helped shed light on cloud storage trustworthiness and scalability, making ventures from a number of industries take notice, Herrera announced.

“I think there’s still some speculation on what the cloud is helpful for in the market and now that they see this actual application, it actually generates other concepts in bodies on how they can apply cloud storage.  Zierick concludes that Nirvanix’s hosting not only helps NASA’s goal of maintaining its information, but also its mandate to make its outer space findings simply accessible on Earth. “One of [NASA’s] goals is to make the general public conscious of the engaging science that they do, so they need to make selected pictures of this mission with some of the photographs from past moon missions eventually available thru sites.

So that’s part of a longer-term implementation plan that they am thinking for this data.”. Some impressive photographs taken in orbit 31 miles ( fifty kilometers ) above the moon’s surface are available on NASA’s site. NASA also explains in great detail the interesting process of snapping the lunar surface that may form a high-resolution map, that can reveal sources of frozen water that might exist at the base of secretive polar craters.
